Derbyshire Burnt Orchids doing okay this year. Earlier in the week, the "main" site (unfortunately away from public footpaths), which has had numbers between 20 and 600 in the last ten years, has approx 150 this year, most in bud but some out properly.

Another site nearby, which usually has small numbers, has c80 in full flower.

Having dipped on the Orphean warbler yesterday, I dropped up the coast to look for the most northerly Burnts, but the directions I had meant I couldn't find any.

Alan

Here's a couple more, from a site where only a handful managed to flower.

Coralroot Ochid

Coralroot Orchid at Sandscale Haws 27th May.
It was stiflingly hot and quite a trek through the dunes following excellent directions from the warden. Felt like an extra from 'The Hill' afterwards!

Out all day in Lancashire/Cumbria for Lady's-slippers and Coralroots - success with both. Many of the Lady's-slippers were already over (especially the nicely planted ones infront of limestone blocks) but still managed some good shots in the rain. Plenty of Dark-red Helleborines on the limestone pavement immediately behind them - potential for a July trip. Coralroots in excellent condition with a couple still to flower.
Virtually had a mental breakdown when I got back as I accidently deleted ALL my photos from the day...fortunately a recovery programme saved me and I managed to restore them. Far too close!

Thanks to John (Kumba) for directions to the Coralroots.

Mike.

Fantastic shots Rich, and very lucky with your lady orchid Mike!
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what's out at Chafford gorges at the moment-I should be visiting tomorrow. Also, how good is Wye Downs? I might go there over the next week, but living in east London it's a long way so I wan't to make sure there will be something there!

Hi Ben

I'm guessing Richard M's pics on this page indicate what Wye Downs is like at the moment!

Sean

To avoid raising expectations I would clarify that the pictures above weren't taken at Wye Downs - and we didn't have time to check if any were in flower yet there.

Rich M

I went to Wye morning. Never been before and did not have any directions as to where the plants were (last minute decision to go and a complete lack of planning is never a good idea). My colleague had a not too precise grid ref obtained several years ago, but a search of that area was fruitless-did not see any cages let alone plants-I presume that many are still caged.
In fact we covered a fair part of the reserve but apart from the expected Fragrant and Common Spotted, all we found was a single Bee.

What a disappointment, what looked to be a cracking plant in the making has started to discolour. Don't know what has caused it but I've also seen a Greater Butterfly doing the same thing. Any ideas?
Sometimes the discolour is caused by late frosts which knock back the developing flowering spikes. I too have seen a number of Greater butterfly orchids been hit where the developing flowering spikes wither off here in Warwickshire a few years ago.

Brian Laney, Northamptonshire.

At least 100 Man orchids still at Chafford, along with several hundred spotteds just coming into flower, 100 Common Twayblades, a couple of bee orchids and a load of Round-leaved wintergreen.
