Gull of some sort. USA (Mississippi)
Hey all,
Once again, bird ID sites fail me. This shot was taken last November 24, and looks like a herring gull, but the beak isn't yellow (ditto for the lesser black-backed gull, tho the tail markings look more like the herring gull). A Bonaparte's gull has a black beak, but also a black head. Anybody have a clue? Thanx in advance. |

Maybe a Franklin's Gull? By the way, the head for Bonaparte's Gull it is not black during the cold season...

It's a Laughing Gull. I would suggest a good field guide (book) to identify tricky birds. For gulls you need lots of photos or illustrations side by side to see all the variation. For gulls in North America, Howell and Dunn's Gulls of the Americas monograph is indispensable.
Franklin's Gull would have a smaller bill, and a black scarf across the back of the head. The bit of white in the primary tips, visible at rest, is typical of fresh remiges in Laughing Gulls. Andy |
