Yesterday, Hanoi's famous turtle was found dead: http://vietnamnews.vn/society/281449/hoaøn-kieam-lakes-100-year-old-turtle-dies.html
The turtle was one of only four known individuals remaining of the species Rafetus Swinhoei. One more lives in a lake near Hanoi and two in a zoo in Shanghai.
The turtle lived in the small lake of Hoan Kiem which is in the centre of Hanoi. The turtle was also the hero of an old legend. Vietnamese emperor Lê Lợi was given a magic sword by the turtle god to defeat the Chinese. Once this done, he returned the sword to an old turtle living in the lake in the centre of Hanoi. Hoan Kiem lake means "the lake of the returned Sword".
The turtle only surfaced rarely, and everytime it did, attracted large crowds who watched it. I only saw it a couple of times.
There were discussions about mating the Hanoi turtles with the ones in China, but this was never attempted. Now with the most famous individual gone, the chances of this species to survive are even slimmer than they already were.
