Going Batty

Sat and watched two pipistrelle bats flying around in our garden last night. Amazingly deft flyers. The first I've seen this year.

Paul.

Couple of Spotted Flycatcher pictures from Weardale this morning.

Dormans Pool - am - Lots of Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, Goldfinch, Whitethroat and Wren below the top car park plus a young looking Cetti's Warbler moving along the reed edge as it fed. I'd not seen one for around two weeks not heard any calling.

RSPB Saltholme - Bottom Tank - Wood Sandpiper though remaining distant when I was there, Black-tailed Godwit x5, Snipe x4 in a family group, three of which appeared to be young birds. Two young Lapwing and a young BH Gull as well.

Hope someone can help. I read last week about somewhere called Hawthorn Dene i think it was on the Durham Coast good for plants and Butterflies. Does anyone know of it, how to get to it, access by car etc. Thanks in advance.

See below link.
Park near the bungalow and continue on foot through the gate/or right hand side of the gate, follow the track and there are signs to go through the dene or if you continue on the main track you will eventually come to the coastal cliffs. If you go through the dene, you will end up further along the track that you left to go through the dene.

Hope this helps.

RSPB Saltholme - Bottom Tank - Wood Sandpiper was still present today sometimes giving very close views as it fed in front of the screen. Also around were Snipe x4, Black-tailed Godwit x1 - still limping badly, Lapwing family, several perched Common Tern, Redshank and BH Gulls. Teal c.12 and two Wigeon.

Not a great deal seen at Dormans Pool though I didn't spend long there. Most notable were the dragonflies and butterflies with Emperor Dragonfly on the grassy ridge resting, Four-spot Chaser, several damselflies, Dingy Skipper, Large SkipperMeadow Brown, Grayling, Common Blue.

A few shots of Barn Owls at Coatham Stob taken in Ian's company on Sunday. Thanks for pointing out the differences between the male and female.

Took these photos of a couple of birds that flew over my home today. I think they may be Common Buzzards but not sure. If they are it would be the first I have seen. Can anyone tell me what birds they are.

thank you

Noel

Thanks for replying. This identifying isnt easy. What threw me is they seemed to be quite high and were just gliding. Also I thought the markings were similar to the Buzzard in my bird guide. Maybe I will get the hang of it one day.

RSPB Saltholme - pm - Avocet x2 on Bottom Tank, an adult and juvenile. A single Black-tailed Godwit plus several Common Tern.

Several juvenile Yellow Wagtail on the Wildlife Watchpoint in front of the hide along Pied Wagtails, Meadow Pipit, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe and Teal.

On the Top Tank - lots of Black-tailed Skimmer, Four-spot Chaser and a few Broad-bodied Chaser along the muddy edge.

The Owls were still showing well at Coatham Stob last night and then again a lot later than usual tonight. It was 8.45 before they put in an appearance. 2-3 Tawny Owls heard calling as well.
