Think you've both lost the plot :stuck: IMHO.
This competition is about birds on perches & presumably the pic that'll win will most likely be the most visually pleasing picture whether a rarity or otherwise, or whether technically brilliant......... & once again IMHO, if somebody submits a rarity in an attempt to garner more votes based on a bird being a rarity then they're probably heading in the wrong direction. Although can understand people wanting to show their good shots of rarities..... although think there are other forums & galleries that'll cater better.
If you find a rarity, is sometimes easy enough to persevere & spend time with the bird & get what you think is yr best shot. Rare birds aren't always skittish.
Similarly, there are a lot of very common, but very skittish common birds that are extremely difficult to photograph.
Before I posted my pic, already realised the competition would be tough & will most likely be won by a visually pleasing image of a bird doing something ie a wing-stretch or tail-fan or to a lesser degree exuding character. Unfortunately my wing-stretches & tail-fans weren't up to the mark........ so I posted a perched bird, knowing full well it wouldn't cut it, but was one of my favourites. Hoped some would like it & it'll attract a little attention.
I made it to the last 30, which pleased me, & am sitting here with a little hope, but equally interested in the way the voting goes........ country / bird affinity, composition etc....... & my "Bird at Feeder" will be a stunner when I get it all worked out

So........ think there are a lot of visually pleasing pics presented & one that should have been in there was IANF's offering, but most likely for political reasons didn't make the cut despite the most views & comments...... so all the best to everybody & may the most visually pleasing image win the day....... vote for Anonymous_Guy regardless of any of the above o:)

Lost the plot indeed, I was merely replying to a post!!! I don't believe in comps like this it matters if the bird is a rarity or not. I feel it should be more about aesthetics, technical and artistic presentation. I personally would vote for a stunning shot of a common bird, over a dodgy shot of a rarity. I think making the common birds looks amazing is part of bird art, a real challenge to make the familiar look exotic.

Thanks Ali........, knew you'd go for it (o)< ........can see you tumbling off yr top perch as I write...... now all I have to do is work out how to get the 10 or so people ahead of the RED-WHISKERED BULBUL to put their foot in it or vote for me :scribe:

Well, Anna's is a very common bird on the west coast of the States! Nearly as ubiquitous as Red-whiskered Bulbuls... LOL

Super selection of pics this month. After much pondering I managed to get it down to the Greenfinch and the Red Whiskered Bulbul, Boy was it hard between these two. The Greenfinch had the edge on sharpness and exposure, but the Bulbul just pipped it as a more aesthetic picture. Well done all, they are all good pictures

How about thinking: what a good photo and not what a lovely bird or what kind of Camera is use.

Everyone good luck.
Greetings Carola.

Some excellent shots this month. It made voting very difficult,
but i got there in the end. Well done to you all.

Thank you all for the beautiful captures this month. It was a joy making a choise, took a long time.

Announcing the winners of the February 2006 theme challenge.

I found this one of the most difficult competitions we’ve ever run – both from selecting the entries for the voting booth and then to make a selection to vote for. It’s nice to see that every finalist received at least one vote though I’m surprised the votes weren’t more evenly split.

From the 115 entries 30 were selected for inclusion in the voting booth.

From the 198 votes cast the results are as follows –

1st place - Anna's Hummingbird by alibenn which received 30/198 votes.

2nd place - Reed Bunting by SeanKP with 25 votes

3rd place - Barn Owl on gate post by RoyH with 19 votes

Congratulations to each of you :t:

Entries will remain in place until tomorrow night – when details of the March competition will be posted.
