Clever Chaffinch (1 Viewer)

For the last few days I have seen a male chaffinch eating from a feeder, this is the first time I have noticed a chaffinch doing this ( they normally feed on the ground). Has anyone else seen this or is this chaffinch Particularly gifted.

Hi Bob

I've not seen a male chaffinch at the feeder, however, we have a female who is rather partial to getting a nut or two from the feeder. They are supposed to be ground feeders, but I think if she finds too little nut bits under the feeder, on she hops!!

What's the Lodge?

Sorry Jane.

The Lodge is the RSPB headquarters at Sandy Beds, there is a shop and you can wander around the grounds. Its hardly the best reserve in the country but its a pleasant stroll and a decent place to spot common woodland birds.

they are developing the area around the feeder station so it is a bit quiet round there at the moment - used to be a good place to see Marsh Tit.

There was a thread a while back memorably entitled 'Chaffhummingfinchbird' or something like that, talking about Chaffinches that think they are Hummers.... ie hovering in front of feeders.

I have a photo of one doing just that in my gallery if anyone is interested....(yes, it was able to land)
