Cuban Vacation Cancelled! (1 Viewer)

My wife and I had two weeks booked at the Tryp Peninsula hotel in Varadero for January, the reason we booked this hotel was because it's situated near a nature reserve and a lagoon(s) ideal for birding without having to travel too far. Last week we received a letter from our travel agent to inform us that in their wisdom? the local goverment has decided to fill in the lagoons and build three more hotels on them to increase tourism! as if there aren't already enough hotels on Varadero! Apparently the work has been ongoing since last winter and the hotels are now in shell form with several large cranes on sight. Myself I could live with the building work and noise etc but to fill in the Lagoons is unforgivable! We have canceled the holiday, thankfully our travel agents warned us in advance (First Choice). This would have been our third trip to Cuba.

While my wife and I have no intentions to return to Varadero for the above reasons we still love Cuba and are considering visiting the Holquin area, does anyone know if the birding is any good there? I mean locally without having to travel.
