Cedar Waxwing Convention (1 Viewer)

CWs have graced my yard periodically over the past weeks. However, this morning about 7:00, I was walking in my yard and I heard them before I saw them. Hundreds darted into the top-most branches of three oak trees right by my house. Isn't is amazing how they fly together so quickly and at various angles in the sky??? One large group broke away from the convention area and fed on berries about 50 yards away. So much noise - but such beautiful birds. I know they won't be here much longer, so every time I hear that unmistakable high-pitched song, I grab my bins to get a closer look. I think we have had record numbers of Waxwings in Louisiana this year. (I know I have seen more of them this season than ever before.) Is it already time for them to move on? That might be why there were so many together at one time. Can anyone estimate when they will be leaving my area?

I can't say when they leave, but I do know that even the ones that stick around up here in Canada congregate in large groups for the winter, although they don't seem to stay put in any one location. Then they either break up into pairs or they fly further north and get replaced with migrant pairs from the south.

Hi Pattianne Northern Ohio enjoyed a cedar waxwing irruption last summer and fall.I never saw so many and at nearly everywhere I went.I didn't mind as I consider them most elegant with those sharp features.
