BBC Wildlife Magazine (1 Viewer)

I used to subscribe to this magazine but stopped some years ago. I remember reading that the BBC had farmed out production of this magazine to a sort of 'generic' magazine publisher to save money. The editor resigned IIRC. People thought it would go downhill. It was previously held in very high regard. I bought it today and was very surprised that it seems to be better than I remember it if a little short on content (92 pages). Just wondering what other peoples thought are on this magazine?

Yes, I remember reading about the editor,Rosamund Kidman Cox,resigning because she felt that the magazine would become dumbed-down. I felt rather unhappy about this as I too had a subscription to it.
But I AM still very happy with the content of BBC Wildlife...ok, so it's a few pages less (92 in the March 2005 issue as opposed to, random selection, 106 in the November 2003 issue) but it still gives value for money.
Highlights for March is good - shows us what to look out for in the coming month, Dominic Couzens' Bird Talk is superb, as ever! Tales From The Bush - good read as always and good to see an article about battery chickens...ok, so they are not wildlife but amidst all the brough-ha-ha about foxhunting, battery chickens and laboratory animals seem to be forgotten by so-called animal lovers! Anything which can bring this real cruelty which happens on a daily basis 24 hours per day for the sake of a few cheap eggs can only be a good thing!
The new section How To... is long overdue! What a lot of folk want IS to know HOW to see the various wild species each month and what signs to look out for...anything which can fan that tiny spark of interest in the natural world into a roaring flame can only be for the good of the planet!
The one thing I am glad to see the back of is Jonathan Porrit's column....I was often left feeling that fighting for the planet was a lost cause after reading his column each month...it was enough to make a person slit her wrists!!!!!
But otherwise I would heartily recommend BBC Wildlife each month...well worth reading.

I got a year's free subscription for christmas, and I'm glad I did. I've only recieved two issues and I already like it. They have interesting topics, as well as a guide to what you can see each month (even though I already know).
I, too, recommend this magazine.
