March 2014 photo theme challenge - Birdscapes (1 Viewer)

The theme this month is Birdscapes.

We're looking for photos of birds in their surroundings rather than a close up view of an individual bird.

The intent is for scenic capture showing the birds in their habitat. The birds may be no more than 5-10% though could still be up to around 50% of the scene. For example a Reed Warbler in a reed bed, Waders along a shoreline, geese feeding on grassland, a Sparrowhawk perched in a tree, etc. Theme interpretation is up to entrants.

Rules -

1. Entries to have been taken in the last twelve months i.e. since 1st March 2013.
2. Date taken to be included in the entry - must at least include month and year.
3. Entry to be uploaded between now and March 20th midnight.
4. Your entry must include bird(s) in habitat.
5. Location taken to be included and must include county/state and country.
6. One entry per member.
7. Only minor image adjustment is permitted, such as cropping, sharpening, contrast, and levels. The photo must not be otherwise greatly manipulated ie. objects should not be added / removed in order to enhance the shot - no composite images.
8. Once uploaded a photo is classed as an entry and cannot be replaced by another shot. However you have until the closing date / time of this competition to ensure that your photo meets the criteria.
9. The entry must be your own work and not previously submitted in a competition on this site.
10. The bird's common name must be given - though please add the scientific too!

Entries to be uploaded directly by entrants to the Monthly Photo Competitions Gallery.

A voting booth will be posted after the 20th.

Please note 30 entries will be selected for addition to the voting booth for members to vote upon.

The entries not selected for inclusion in the voting booth will be moved to their respective Gallery forum.

Any queries about this months competition, please post below.

I've looked through all the entries of this months competition. All are good, some are excellent. However, I'm not quite sure that all fit into the title "Birdscape". Scape as a lone word has several meanings but as the combining form -scape means, to quote Dictionary.com, “an extensive view, scenery,” or “a picture or representation” of such a view, as specified by the initial element: cityscape; moonscape; seascape.

Are we going for a tight definition of Birdscape, or are we going for a rather loose definition as implied in the final part of the preamble "Theme interpretation is up to entrants"?

A loose definition is usually applied. If there are more than 30 entries then those best fitting the theme title will be the ones more likely selected for members to vote upon once we reach the closing date for entries.

I agree with Dave - looking at the entries I'm now not sure what "Birdscape" means
