Pelagic bird watching (1 Viewer)

Hello togehter,

I think about bird watching in Ireland.
Most interested in pelagic birds.
Where is good place and when is the best time ( my idea was September or October ) ?
Which pelagic birds are expected in this time ?
How is about waders in this time ?
Which is a good starting point, I think foreign plane connection are to Dublin or Cork.

Try shearwater bird tours for pelagic boat trips out of west cork.

August and September are best for seabirds. September is best for american waders.

You should get your hands on the book, where to find birds in Ireland, by Eric Dempsey for a complete guide to where you can look for such species.

The Bridges of Ross in County Clare is the most well known seawatching site in Ireland but there are also several other well known headlands. As suggested, get the book. Search in this site for seawatching, Ireland. Search the site www.irishbirding.com for your target birds and see where they were seen and when as a guide
If you are only going to one area then maybe west County Cork or Kerry might be best? you could well find your own american waders. You will need a car.

Very useful link, it sounds very interesting.

American waders we have very rare in Germany.
Pacific Golden Plover we had once in the last 8 years.
Spotted Sandpiper and Buff breated Sandpiper also only one in different years.
One or two Pectoral Sandpiper in different years.
How often they appear in Ireland ?

Do You have many waders in Ireland ?
In Germany we have only some waders, except Northern sea.

American waders can reasonably be expected in September. The numbers and mix of species vary from year to year.

If you wish to switch to wader watching, Tacumshin Lake in co. Wexford will most likely be your best bet. You will need wellies (rubber boots). The site will be well watched at that time of year, and any rare species should pop up on the various Twitter feeds which put out news.

Those 3 counties would be your best bet for waders at that time of year, with tacumshin being the most reliable site. The benefits of Cork and Kerry is that you also have seawatching headlands nearby if the weather allows for it.

Again, get your hands on that book to start planning where to go.
