Aythya x Aix (1 Viewer)

My first reaction would be Ferruginous Duck, due to the overall colouration and white rear end. A weird combination whatever!

Hi Aeshna,a hybrid between two Aythya is excluded by the weird shape of the dutch bird...see bill, tail, head shape.

Also Tufted x Ferruginous Duck is,though one of the less common naturally occurring aythya hybrids, still quite wellknown and has a typical Aythya appearance, and showing a short tuft. See the following examples:

Hi Marcus,

havve a look at this one I commented some time ago, I think this could be Aythya nyroca x Aix sponsa:

Generally ,with the varaibility of hybrids being grater than variability within each parent species I could accept the Dutch bird as the same hybrid combination.

What puzzles me however in the dutch bird , is the dark eye. Male hybrids with nyroca seem tohave relatively light eyes in general, so why this exception here?
