Garden / Yard List 2017 (2 Viewers)

After a very slow April, a nice push of migrants today with an influx of Whinchats, several Swallows over, a male Montagu's Harrier and, escorting two pairs of Teal, a pair of Garganeys (4th record for my land, but a pair did breed in 2009, so here's hoping).

Also Black Redstart and Blackcap, plus Whooper Swan visiting flood pool again.

85. Garganey
86. Montagu's Harrier
87. Swallow
88. Black Redstart
89. Whinchat
90. Blackcap

We have passerines arriving or pushing on North now

Bullfinch, Brambling and Siskins which have been absent from our feeder for three years plus Hawfinch seen from the sofa which we don't see often.

Pied Flycatchers are late, arrived last year on 28th April but no sign yet.

The pics below are taken at our feeder which is visible from the sofa.

Here's my ones taken from my bedroom window some time back ...sometimes not bad to be living out East huh? Would be nice if spring got a move on though!

You can see my house in the eye of the last one :)

As a Brit, it's great to see Hawfinch like this.

The downside to living in the East as you allude to is the relatively short spring / summer

Went out to the laundry facilities this morning and got a Warbling Vireo in the carrotwood trees behind my apartment . Just now, I went out to get a couple of shots of my back area to post and got an American Robin. I was upset a few days ago because the business complex behind us trimmed the trees (they are on their side of our wall) and several almost fledglings were in other trees calling and parents were scrambling. What an idiotic time to trim. God knows how many nests were messed with! Now the trees are thinned and seem to be attracting some activity. I am so happy to have gotten these two! Maybe my list won't be too dismal after all! I had my long lens on the camera and couldn't get good shots of the yard. I did get a couple of the A. Robin with it. I went back in and changed lenses. Now my camera won't work. LOL Keeps clicking and err 05 comes up. Googled it--flash pop-up issue that I might be able to fix. So no photos of my little area in the old folks home today.

Hmmm.
I was going to crow about being in the enviable position of being able to see Hawfinch easily AND living in the warmer south where the spring/summer is nice and long, but on opening the curtains this morning, here's my entry for the 'view from the window' competition.
Did somebody say it was May today?
Not so much summer migrants arriving, more a case of winter visitors reappearing, two Siskins for example. The only bonus I suppose was a new one for the year:

60 Meadow Pipit

which I heard call overhead as I was slithering all over the place trying to put the sheep fence upright after snow laden branches had flattened it!
It was warmer in Barnsley last Thursday H than it is here :t:

Typical Bank Holiday weather here today, Richard - dull, cool & rain in many areas - though not here for a change. Forecast gives better for this week.

Three very noisy mistle thrushes in the garden yesterday. They're not deperately uncommon in my part of London, but were garden firsts for me.

The snow's melting now and the tiniest lambs haven't died, I nearly did though when the farmer asked me to touch the fence to see if the current was working properly (who says the French don't have a sense of humour?).

Just went outside to turn my sodden boots around so the sun can dry them and BINGO 'tack tack' calling as it landed on top of a pine,

61 Ring Ousel

I'd given up on them for this year but I suppose the snow has caused some problems for them higher up and, as sometimes happened at our old place, they've descended to an area where they can dig for worms :t:

Up here in the frozen north, was glorious sunshine today ... nine species of butterfly and about 150 individuals. :t:

Lots of migrants arriving, influx of Pied Flycatcher, Cuckoo, etc.

New Garden List.

Not sure of the rules here - have not moved in yet, but went on a brief visit today.
Whilst there:

Rook
Blackbird
Starling
Goldfinch
Collared Dove
Jackdaw
Buzzard

Can I have these pending my move, folks?

I can't see why not H!.....how long do I have to catch up with your current abode list? :eek!:

Fingers crossed we move next Saturday.

Looking out for Swifts here - but no sign yet. Maybe weather's too good & they're passing high up.

There are no rules ... ;)

If you own the property ... thinking about it, don't think anyone would get banned if they posted up a list of birds seen when visiting a friends garden?

I was tempted to start a garden list before we moved in here, Alpine Accentor and Wryneck being a couple of crackers that we saw while we were painting and decorating in the two years before the move!!
Now we're here, the year so far is proving not so exciting but today I heard the distant piping call which I'd been waiting for, and then it perched up and sang on a nearby tree in all its glory:

62 Common Redstart

The local Black Redstart pair didn't exactly welcome it with open wings and chased it a couple of times each time
it came close to the house so I'm wondering whether I'll see and hear it again.
