Hello mate....haven't typed that one up yet but I will. Highlights were both Rhino, lots of lion (but no other cats except 2 African wild cats), puku (near endemic antelope to Chobe but easy enough to see) and 200+ elephant swimming across the Chobe river.

In answer to Johns questions, Etosha pan itself had zero water and next to no animals but the waterholes drew everything in as it was so dry elsewhere. We only went to Daan Viljoen for the day at the end but it was lovely and peaceful, endemic Monteiro Hornbills easy to see and a few animals, I'd recommend it as a first stop to get over the flight for a couple of days.

Generally the birding was brilliant but I know there were 50-60 winter migrants not yet arrived such as the Carmine Bee-Eaters and most shrikes. Any other questions let me know and maybe I can help.

Here's some photos..........

Hi

Have you ever travelled to South Africa? If so how does Namibia compare on ease of travel, cost etc.? Obviously you didn't see it but do you know how easy cheetah is in Namibia as that was my big dip in SA.

Cheers

Costs: about the same

Currency: GBP1 = about 11.65 N$ or ZAR at present. In your terms everything is cheap.

Travel costs: about the same in both countries

Accommodation: Hotels (only when you have to), B&Bs (plentiful), Parks Board Camps (very acceptable), Upmarket lodges (where do they think your goldmine is)

Tour Guides: Normally as good as useless and most pretend to be great white hunters, a good one is like finding a pearl in a manure tank. Better to do your own thing and ask the locals. They seem to know more than the "Khaki Kids".

Tour Operators: Only in business because many tourists are dumb or lazy - they will show you what they want to see and chase you from pillar to post.

What you need: A hire vehicle - preferably 4x4 - and time on your side, a willingness to rough it a bit and not be to fussy about anything except clean ablutions.

Clothing: Stick to cotton, synthetics cause irritation in extreme heat.

Safety: More bombs go off in the UK than in Africa, use common sense, don't give lifts or enter Black townships or squatter camps where it can be very hairy to say the least.

Driving: Left hand side of road, same as UK. Don't forget International Driving Licence.

Credit Cards: Visa and MasterCard (Diners who? Amex??? and the others are a waste of time)

TC's: Thomas Cook, N$, ZAR, USD not Pounds - you may need your Bank receipt to encash them.

Timing: Dry season, long grass in rains hides too much. Try to avoid school holidays and get more freedom that way without howling brats infesting every corner of the country.

Scarce animals in viewing terms: Leopard and cheetah, they are around but not seen as often as tour operators would have us believe. Seeing either is more good luck than judgement.

Above all, have a sense of humour and don't chase your tail.

Thanks

my timing is restricted by the fact that I am teacher and so am limited to the UK school holidays i.e. end July/August, won't complain too much as that means I can go for 5/6 weeks. Is it a suitable place to take my 5 year old son (not usually a howling brat and with a respectable mammal list)? South Africa was ideal, camping no problem but couldn't rough it too much.

Hi Steve

5yo is OK - he will love it. You should consider Kruger in RSA & Etosha in Namibia - both these parks are full of mammals & birds and everything else. I prefer Kruger personally. But you have a huge choice in the region. You could actually spend your whole holiday in one or the other and still have more to see. Look up both on the Internet. Accommodation is available in Park Camps - pretty basis but clean & nice. Good websites for info: http://www.parks-sa.co.za/frames.asp?mainurl=sitemap/sitemap.html and http://www.getawaytoafrica.com/ and a host of others. Our mid year school break is July/Aug but only 3-4 weeks so remember to do your booking early. Malaria risk about nil at that time of year but its really no problem. Getaway magazine is good source of info but never believe everything you read.

You can also hire things like Kombi campers which will keep costs down.

You are welcome to phone me when you get here - local dial 0832275763.

Min lens for game 100~400, don't know what camera you have got.

Enjoy - my private email is [email protected]

Stay out of the hands of tour operators - they make the profit you need to spend on extras.

Hi Steve
don't know where you live but I do talks for the RSPB and my next one is about Birding in Southern Africa! My other two talks are about birding the hotspots of Kwazulu Natal and Birding Kruger. Should you live anywhere in the North west perhaps you could come along. The talk is planned for January, don't know the exact date yet but . I'm also off to Namibia in three weeks time. I will let you know how it went. It is purely a birding trip but of course there will be plenty of animals to observe.
regards
john

I enjoyed going through your bird list. It brought back fond memories of our February Trip to Kenya. We did get the "big five" there, missing only on the leopard.
