Not sure what was seen at Cley during the day, but this evening's gulls again included 2 Caspian Gulls - a juvenile and a sec-summer (...but not yesterday's juv & sec-summer!). No sign of yesterday's adult wood Sandpiper, but two Hobbies hunting over the scrapes.

Potter Heigham Marshes....the new kid on the block? or just well reported this year due to the breeding b.w.s. and now Baird's sandpiper and a Temminck's stint as well as other supporting species.
My only Norfolk Bairds was at Cantley nearly 25 years ago.......drove through floods to see it I recall.....all the way from sunny Slough.

Pat

ps. b.w.s. = black winged stilt

Up to five Caspian Gulls at Cley tonight on Simmond's Scrape - an adult, a sec-summer and up to three juveniles. Also several Yellow-legged Gulls, 7 Spoonbills, Hobby and the geot'd female limosa Black-t Godwit.

Fewer gulls at Cley again tonight, but still two Caspian Gulls (adult & sec-summer) and more than a dozen Yellow-legged Gulls amongst them, on Simmond's Scrape. Also 3 Med Gulls, 10 Green Sandpipers, Spoonbill and a Dutch (blue-flagged) limosa Black-tailed Godwit.

What with seeing Thrush Nightingale, Glossy Ibis and Polecat in the Cley Square over the last couple of days, I've not been at the computer much. Still adult and sec-summ Caspian Gulls coming in to the roost last night, with Noctule Bat a dusk bonus. Waders have included Wood Sandpiper, Little Stint and Greenshanks. Seawatching has been interesting, but no predicted blow in the offing...

The Glossy Ibis came to roost on Simmond's Scrape at dusk, after having been at Salthouse all day. Also a juvenile Caspian Gull on Pat's Pool (the first juv for a week, and a new individual) along with about 15 Yellow-legged Gulls (all ages). Also at Cley today, 2 Wood Sandpipers, Green & Common Sandpipers, Spotted Redshank & Greenshank. Nice to see Water Voles too.

Sunday 13 August

We saw a night heron at the main NWT reserve on Hickling broad today about 16.30. The bird started in the wet woodland near the boat trip pier and we then saw it in a tree as we started down the trail back to the visitor centre. The bird stayed long enough for us to conform there were no leg rings.

Although the Glossy Ibis was nearby at Salthouse all day, we did not see it come in to roost at Cley tonight. The two Caspian Gulls (juv + ad) were on Simmond's Scrape, plus there were a few Y-legged and a couple of Med Gulls, a potential Baltic Gull and a LRPlover. Also at Cley today, two Wood Sandpipers still by E Bank and several Green Sandpipers on the reserve.

Golden plover - 33 moulting adults roosting on the fresh marsh late morning

Black tailed godwit - 100 on fresh marsh

Five Caspian Gulls at Cley this evening (four juvenile/1st-winters & one adult), as well as a few Yellow-l Gulls, a Wood Sandpiper and several Greenshanks. Also three Hobbies hunting over the reserve, and the Glossy Ibis remains in residence nearby at Salthouse.

Just the four Caspian Gulls tonight (3 juveniles and one adult), and only about 10 Yellow-legged Gulls on the scrapes. Also Hobbies active at Cley, so few waders.

Hi Alcina

Dauke's hide provides a panoramic view of both Simmonds' Scrape (left) and Pat's Pool (right) where an assortment of large white-headed gulls (LWhG) gather on various islands toward dusk.

There is often a veritable smorgasbord of LWhG for the larid aficionado to decipher age and (sub)species.

Enjoy your visit, Rob
