I actually thought choosing a winner was easy this month, it is an amazing picture of a very difficult species to photograph.
Why my pic didnt make it considering some did I'll never know but 75% of the entries selected by the judges are superb, congrats guys for some beautiful images. o:D

All pics are excellent and chosing one is going to be difficult.Guys and Girls best of luck and may the better pic's win.My pic's was dropped but it was fun and i never upload to win but to enjoy.(ah) 3:) :D

Some superb images! All executed very well. Clear winner IMO though.

I have to say that I am a bit surprised that so many images of very common (UK) birds have been chosen for the shortlist. I am not sure that the difficulty of capturing a shy or rare bird is being taken into consideration...

As someone who entered a photo of a very common bird, I must say I was interested to see whether it got through or not for that very fact! (I was happy with it from a photographic point)

Of course, what's common in one area may be rare in another and vice versa, being common doesn't necessarily make it easy (try getting 'the' shot of House Sparrows, for instance) and being rare doesn't mean difficult (photographically).

I was discussing it with another member before posting my entry and I said that I knew I would be at a disadvantage coming face to face with some very colourful, exotic birds and that would make it more difficult to win - any votes that I might get would be a bonus!

I've judged more than a few (general) photographic competitions myself and I know how hard it is to decide what criteria to apply, unless they're clearly spelled out by the club concerned. Especially how much the effort and skill in capturing the shot should be taken into account, rather than applying purely pictorial and technical factors.

I suspect though if I'd chosen one particular photo from this selection, there would have been mutterings about it not fitting the description of "Perched Bird" ;)

My entry for the perched bird competition was moved last night. I received this email as a reason from the bird forum."We felt that your photo, titled "Bullfinch", was more appropriate in a different category"
http://www.birdforum.net/pp_gallery/showphoto.php?photo=81175

I am not sure if my pic broke the rules of the competition or if I put it in the wrong category.

Anyone have a clue?

Brett.
PS Good luck to all of you with entries this month.

Hi Brett,

Your photo complied with the rules and was entered in the correct forum however it didn't make the final 30 for the voting booth and was moved to it's respective Gallery Forum as detailed in the posted rules.

The email you received is an auto reply generated whenever a photo is moved in the Gallery to notify the poster where the photo can be found.

The theme for February 2006 is 'Perched Bird'.

Entries should be of a single perched bird. This is defined as a single bird which is stood e.g. on the ground, in the water, on a tree branch, fence, lampost, telegraph pole, roof top etc. Birds in flight will not be accepted.

The rules must be adhered to in order to avoid disqualification. The Moderators decision is final.

Rules -

1. Entry to have been taken in the last twelve months.
2. Date taken to be included in the entry - must at least include month and year.
3. Entry to be uploaded between 1st and the 20th midnight (GMT).
4. Entries must contain a single perched bird.
5. Location taken to be included and must include county/state and country.
6. One entry per member.
7. Only minor image adjustment is permitted, such as cropping, sharpening, contrast, and levels. The photo must not be otherwise greatly manipulated ie. objects should not be added / removed in order to enhance the shot - no composite images.
8. Once uploaded a photo is classed as an entry and cannot be replaced by another shot. However you have until the closing date / time of this competition to ensure that your photo meets the criteria.
9. The entry must be your own work and not previously submitted in a competition on this site.
10. The subject's common name must be given - though please add the scientific too!
11. Entries to be uploaded directly by entrants to the Monthly Photo Competitions Gallery.

A voting booth will be posted after the 20th.

Please note 30 entries will be selected for addition to the voting booth for members to vote upon.

Entries not selected for inclusion in the voting booth will be moved to their respective Geographical Gallery forum.

Comments on entries are permitted.

Any queries about this months competition - please post below.

As I understand, when a picture are remove from the competition it's directed in the category it's suppose to go as the competition it's a temporary category by itself; like bird of north america, wild animal...
Good luck to everybody

Thanks IanF.

Looks like bird forums email wording caused the confusion. I suppose it's a standard email sent out when any picture is moved, even from a competition forum?

I'll know what to expect next time.
Brett.

Yes, Avan summed things up better than I did. The competition forum is just a temporary forum as it's re-used each month.

The auto-reply email is the same for the whole Gallery. We just nominate the titles of each forum there so the one for the competitions is treated no different from the rest as far as the software is concerned.

So are you implying that its much more difficult to photograph a rarity than it is a common bird?:egghead: Sorry but I dont think it matters a jot whether the bird is common or not, its the quality of the picture and the composition that should be carefully judged. Some of the best bird photographs Ive seen are of common birds. Besides your rare birds are our common birds and vice versa. Now some birds are really shy and difficult to approach and Im sure the judges take that into consideration. At the end of the day they only choose the top 30 WE choose the winner by voting.
Anyway you only have to go on the rarities page on surfbirds to notice that most rarity picture aren't that good especially when 10 million other birders have posted their pics of that very same rarity :'D
Im still miffed that a Herring Gull made the final list!!! Sorry dude but its a GULL :smoke:

Not technically more difficult, but it is a case of opportunity. A rarity, is by definition not going to be encountered often, and recording that species becomes a case of what you can do given the limited opportunity. Common birds however, ARE easier to get really good shots of, purely on the ratio of opportunity, pre-visualization of shots once an individual in favourable circumstances has been found.

In the past, I've seen some spectacular shots of Gulls!!!

Good luck to all the finalists...Alister

Sorry mate but I still disagree, I understand what you are saying but....lets use an example. Now obtaining a good photograph of a Blackpoll Warbler in Britain isnt easy as its a rare bird and they dont show up that often, but here in Florida it would be relatively easy. I guess it depends on where you are in the world. It would be pretty hard for me to get a really good shot in the US of a Northern Wheatear but you would probably have no trouble at all. Now I agree that getting a picture of an endemic species with a small population would be hard but then some of those dont exactly shy away from the camera. Like I say your rarities are our common birds etc etc.
There are some great gull shots but its hard to get anybody excited over a picture of a Herring Gull.

Well, criteria or no, the selection this month was quite difficult for me. I know I was swayed in my final choice by the fact that owls are among my favorite birds . . . I'll leave it to you to guess which I chose . . . .

And I'm no photography judge. I just go with what makes my heart go 'bump' or 'ahhhh' -- rarity or difficulty is generally not a consideration with me at all . . . .

I live in China, so Northern Wheatear would be tough for me too :))

Based on your example of a Blackpoll Warbler, in the UK it is a rarity, in Florida it's a common bird. If the question is, is it harder to get a good shot of a rarity, the answer is still yes, because in Florida it is no longer a rarity. All you can conlude from your theory is whether it is possible to get a good shot of ANY particular species, regardless of where in the world you take it. You are not taking into consideration relative abundance...
