During waits we checked out a dead lomg-eared owl found yesterday. This adult female was found beneath power lines with a broken wing, emaciated. Our guess is that it hit the power lines, broke it's wing, then starved to death.

The number of previous years' birds continues to astonish me. Amongst today's retraps were 14 birds ringed last winter, 8 of which have not been caught before this winter; and 3 ringed the previous winter none of which had been caught previously this winter.

Decided to fit in extra sessions to try to get more information on turnover during spring migration. Conditions have changed radically, from much warmer than average to a bit colder than average. Initial impressions are that many wintering birds have returned to the feed station after absence and that arrivals have slowed or stopped.

Also seen/heard
Greylag geese
Peewit
Skylark
Meadow pipit
Blackbird
Mistle thrush
Song thrush

Just before dark our first house martin appeared. This is the second year running that house martin have been seen here before swallow. In these conditions, early arrivals are not going to get an advantage.

Mainly forgetting corvids, gulls, non-natives, pigeons and tits.

Many thanks to all concerned, Mike.

Nice day again, and loads of new birds as well as a number of last year's birds that have not been caught this winter. It does seem that in nice weather we are seeing significant turnover.

To our knowledge the twite retrap is a control - not ringed within 10 km.
