I've tried the 8x42 a few times. It is typical or today's roofs at that price, in other words impressive color and sometimes contrast compared to budget roofs of 10 years ago, but not so solid, and lots of sample variation with respect to resolution due to collimation and other assembly errors.
A coworker had a pair of 10x42 REI XR; they weren't particularly striking, but wouldn't really hold you back in any way. The focus-knob was not to my liking, though, as it had a fair amount of slack/play (note: focus knob is, in all likelihood, where I am most picky regarding binocular-related things, though).
