Hi all - I am in West LA near the airport for business for a few quick days...won't have time to travel far...any good recommendations if I'm looking for birds like Allen's Hummingbird, SoCal warblers, California Towhee...anything good possible in West LA?

GVCA -

Thank you for the tip. I followed your advice and spent all the time I could on a short business trip at Ballona wetlands...all of 25 mins. I used to live in LA's South Bay and, at the time, was very much more novice than now and I never went to Ballona. I now realize it is very beautiful and rare in LA.

I have one question. I spotted a hummingbird which was, as far as I could tell, a rufous hummingbird. When I returned home I noticed that rufous are not in SoCal in summer...does that mean I was looking at an Allen's?

You will never know

Rufous have been migratng through since early August and it is extremely hard to tell a Rufous from an Allens.
