Can anyone identify this larva found when I moved some old carpet used for weed supression in the garden over the winter.

Would the compost heap give it some chance of survival or is it now just bird food?

Goat Moth larva

Thanks.

Definitely Goat Moth.

The colour did not come out so well on my photos.

We have plenty of the trees shown as food plants. I note that it overwinters 2 or 3 years before reaching maturity and the Romans considered it a delicacy if fed with flour - perhaps I'll give that treat a miss.
