It is a nice day today (but a little windy). This morning I added six (6) more birds to my 2011 Missouri List:

A birding friend and I birded Squaw Creek NWR today and I was able to add five year birds to my 2011 Missouri List:

136. Lark Sparrow, near Forbes, Missouri, on the way up to the refuge.

These next four (4) on the refuge:

428. Hooded Warbler
429. White-eyed Vireo

At the college later yesterday:
202. Swainson's Thrush.

Tomorrow we're heading down to High Island in the hope of seeing migrant warblers. So far it's been a quiet year for migrants there and all over our area. But we might be lucky - one day this week High Island had 20 warbler species plus Tanagers, Orioles, Buntings and Grosbeaks. Not one of its best days but not bad!

Oh, to be at High Island! Jeff, hurry the birds up here to Missouri so we can see some of them!

* Someone had their first Chimney Swift yesterday at Kansas City, so I should see some in a day or two!

Three new birds today, so my Year List is up to 432.

430. Henslow's Sparrow
431. Cliff Swallow
432. House Wren

In addition to those birds, I added Great Egret and Chimney Swift to my ABA Area and Indiana year lists, which are at 153 and 146, respectively.

Two new birds today put me up to 434 for the year.

433. Prairie Warbler
434. Ruffed Grouse

The grouse was an Indiana state lifer (no. 303), a bird I never dreamed of seeing in Indiana because they are close to being extinct in the state. Nice prolonged looks from ten to 20 feet away as it sat at the side of the road, showing no fear.

In addition to the birds listed above, I added Yellow Warbler to my ABA Area and Indiana year lists, which are at 156 and 149, respectively.

Brenda and I volunteered to serve at the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters information desk today. Before we assumed the duties there we drove around the ten mile auto tour loop to see what birds might be around. We observed about 50 species.

First of the year (FOY) species for me included:

145. Forster's Tern
146. Marbled Godwit

Still a quiet migration season in southeast Texas so far but 24 hours at the coast turned up 90+ species and added a reasonable number of birds to my list:

204. Caspian Tern
205. Black Tern
206. Semi-palmated Plover
207. Whimbrel
208. Eastern Kingbird
209. Northern Waterthrush
210. Summer Tanager
211. Scarlet Tanager
212. Indigo Bunting
213. Painted Bunting
214. Orchard Oriole
215. Baltimore Oriole
216. Rose-breasted Grosbeak
217. Red-eyed Vireo
218. Dickcissel
219. Kentucky Warbler
220. Swainson's Warbler
221. Yellow Warbler
222. Blackburnian Warbler
223. Prothonotary Warbler
224. Blue-winged Warbler
225. Hooded Warbler
226. Great-crested Flycatcher
227. Semi-palmated Sandpiper
228. Wilson's Phalarope

Can't wait for the bulk of migrants to arrive!
