Dorset birding (1 Viewer)

Wyke Down

Wyke Down this afternoon, a Peregrine flew over and there was a large flock of Fieldfare moving around the area and also a small group of Bullfinch. The 1st Short Eared Owl appeared at 15.10 and after about 10 mins was joined by another 2 . Record pics below taken in diminishing light.

Three pintail - 2 drakes and a female on the big lake this afternoon. My first record at the site for a long time (January 2011).

Longham lakes today

Couldn't see Lorne's water pipit and the rain started to bucket down. Did have a male stonechat and 4 pintail before the downpour.

Longham lakes today

Bitterly cold at Lake today and pintail seem to have moved on. Did have a pipit in flight in right area, which might have been interesting if it had landed. But it didn't. Green woodpecker probably best bird, yet again.

A successful day at Middlebere and Arne today. Lots of avocet in the channel, ringtail harrier, marsh harrier, peregrine, sparrow hawk, kestrel, Barn Owl, dartford warbler, raven and more of the commoner species. Not a bad start!

Morden Bog/Hatch Pond

Morden Bog, this morning, fairly routine birds. No sign of the GGS, a party of 3 Bullfinch and a flock of 80+ Fieldfare were the best of the bunch.

Hatch Pond form 15.30 to 16.45, on arrival there was a Bittern on the far side of the lake, kindly pointed out by a couple already there. It stayed there until about 16.30 when it moved 30 yaerds left and started to roost halfway up a patch of reeds. Apparently there was a report this morning of 2 birds seen. Also a pair of Egyptian Geese flew in at about 16.00 and a Water Rail was heard just after sun down. The record shot of the Bittern was from about 200 metres, and the Geese in fading light.

Very late roosting Bittern at Hatch Pond this evening, I was there from 15.00 and didn't see one until it was virtually dark at 16.55pm, when again it flew into reeds halfway up on the far bank. That's 3 days I've been there since 27th Dec and one has roosted in that area, presumably the same bird.

Another birder saw 2 Bittern earlier in the day and a single Bearded Tit!!

Middlebere

Marsh Harrier 3 times past the hide in 40 minutes, left hide and watched Male Hen Harrier hunting over reeds by the lane, it then landed on a bank infront of the hide (although about 300-400 yards infront of).

Also on the walk to the hide 3 Crossbill, drinking from a puddle on the track.

Waxwings

Saw the Waxwings this afternoon at Lytchett Matravers, counted a maximum of 24 birds, they were on Wareham Road, coming from the A35 near the start of the village. Watched them in the top of a large tree until they flew off. Started to make our way out of Lytchett going on to Wyke Down, when just at the end of the village we came across them again :t:, this time lower and feeding. They also were communally drinking from the guttering of a nearby house.
