we've had a great white egret on a gravel pit near me for ages now.. its so good to be able to take the kids and get great views of such a stunning bird.. plus its usually with a couple of little egrets and a heron.. so all flying together they look great.... i'm in east peckham by the way.. james
 
There seems to be a lot of records of this species in the UK of late. Are they on the verge of colonising?

yup. Scarce winterer now rather than vagrant or passage migrant. I think 8 wintered together on the Somerset levels, 3 on the Dee Marshes, 3 or so at Dunge and multiples at various other sights. I guess c40 birds wintered. There were certainly birds in breeding plumage last spring but unwise to speculate further.

There do seem to be birds constantly (year round) in several UK locations, at least one area with multiple birds. I'm sure it won't be long if they are not already breeding.
