Water shifting around the world (1 Viewer)

The headlines have always concentrated on the disappearance of prominent bodies of water - the Sistan/Seistan on the Iran-Afghainstan border and the Aral Sea are good examples - but the article at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-37187100 shows in images the areas of blue where new or enlarged waterbodies have formed or been created.

Of particular interest is the huge numbers of waterbodies appearing in places such as Tibet; given a degree of permanency, these waterbodies will extend wintering and breeding distributions of many bird species. To a more limited extent, this process has occurred in Pakistan and Afghanistan over the last three decades as the construction of small reservoirs and dams for villages has led to range extensions for plants and trees, creating habitat for insects and birds.
