A Welsh birder in Dorset!
hi folks,

went down to my local nature reserve this morning for a few hours and had rather a good few hours. first suprise was a male brambling with hundreds of chaffinches, also some really interesting raven behaviour (the reserve is popular because of the amount of ravens), i watched one trying to be a goshawk? it tried to catch a wood pigeon and almost did. the raven give one pigeon a hell of a thud!

Anyway, whilst on the topic of raptors, the highlight of the trip was 2 sightings of a male goshawk. once just briefly over the trees and the second time... well amazing. the bird was quite high up and the then started to drop into the trees. as it decended it picked up tremendous speed and crashed staight into the canopy! it probably got abit of concusion now. but what a sight.

have anyone come across this raven behaviour i mentioned before???
Seen a raven kill an oystercatcher. Hooded crow kill a lapwing and dismember it and feed its 2 full grown young. Magpie drop down onto a house sparrow and bludgeon it to death with its bill before eating it. They really are tenacious predators the crows. I still love them.
But, Luke - never seen a raven chase a pigeon, although I'll bet if one catches one, it'll not be the first time.

but the funny thing was, the pigeons werent associating the ravens as predators, some kept returning to the spot and getting chased off again. it was almost like the pigeons were saying to the ravens 'could you stop it please'.

nice one luke.you have a pm.
p.s`you didnt hear a gunshot before the gos dropped by any chance?i think you know what i mean.mike.
