Hoping someone can confirm or I.D. this snake that was a foot behind me in the Everglades. Didn't know it was there until my sidekick told me that she thought it would be a good idea for me to move ;)

The only I.D. I can come up with is the Florida Green Snake.

The kind of Green Snake I remember is small, slim and green, and the scales are relatively smooth-- as a matter of fact, I now recall that there are two species, a Smooth Green Snake and a Rough Green Snake. Neither of them have scales as strongly keeled as this individual. Nor do they have any dorsal blotches of any kind.

This looks like a Natrix water snake of some species (there are several there, as I recall) but my herpetological memory is almost gone. I doubt however that they have renamed any of them as 'Green Snake'. The dorsal markings are very obscure, so I suspect it will shed its skin soon.

.. well, as I said, it's been a long time. 'Green Water Snake' now sounds somewhat familiar, but I sure don't recognize the genus-- has there been a taxonomic revision since 1967?

Cottonmouth that close would have been all glistening white mouth lining. They go into full cocked position for the slightest reason. This one was just hoping it could hide from You.
