Subsong: a non-ornithologist's question (1 Viewer)

Prompted by a Blackbird Turdus merula singing quietly from a neighbour's garden this morning (well out of season for full song).

I've always thought "subsong" and left it at that. But I'm not sure, so ...
Is there an agreed definition of "subsong" ?

All I've found on a very quick trawl boils down to "a quiet song often delivered with the bill closed".

Is that it ? Has anyone explored why, and when, "subsong" is delivered ?

Sorry if this is an FAQ.
