B I F with 7D (1 Viewer)

I recently did some testing of the 7D for BIF.

The subjects were fulmars at a distance of 200M over a grey sea. Fast subjects over a similar background. The day was overcast. I was impressed with the AF and tracking capabilities of the camera. The keeper rate was probably around 75%.

I switched to the 1Diin and felt that the AF was faster for the initial pick up, but that they 7D tracked better over the sea. We are talking margins here, but 0.1 of a second is a lot. I did not time the differences and these differences could be caused by familiarity or settings that I have not investigated. The keeper rate from the 1D was probably around 60%.

I say probably because an Otter turned up and I formatted all my test cards to get as many shots as possible. Being able to switch to ISO1000+ on the 7D was a real bonus as the Otter was under a bridge, but that's for another thread.

So in summary. I felt the AF was good, and the tracking excellent under testing conditions.
Interesting comparison Marcus - could I ask what AF mode you were using on the 7D?

a few i got

i got out yesterday in the sunshine, the 7d worked rather well as these are fast movers .
Most shots that i had time to get on the birds were either sharp or very close to it .
I used slow tracking AF point expanded ,400iso and around 1/2500 with my 500f4isL at f4 .
Some i used the 1.4tc but that starts to push the AF on these fast guys as the FL is that much longer making it harder to get a crisp sharp shot partley due to finding the bird in the VF in the first place .
Rob.

I'm getting a lot of keepers of big relatively slow flying birds against clear skies. Here are some against more challenging backgrounds.

The Great Egret had just taken off and was against a background of trees, the first Stellers Sea Eagle was in a blizzard. These 2 were only slightly cropped.

In homage to Nikon Kid the 2nd Eagle and Buzzard against very busy backgrounds are more heavily cropped.

I use AF expansion with slow tracking and AI Servo, probably the same settings as the rest of you.......

All taken with a 100-400L.

Thought it was time for a thread revival. Here's a small assortment from my 7D and 100-400.

Hi Tim. I agree, it's a good time to post more pics from the Canon 7D, a real good value in Canon's DSLR lineup, even though I have been using my 1D MK4 lately most of the time. Enclosed are a few I have taken with the 7D and 400mm DO. All shots were handheld. Visit my website to see more pics from the 7D.
