How to process digital images (1 Viewer)

Hello Forum!
For processing the digital images taken with my Nikon coolpix 4500 and Leica Apo Televid I usually use Photoshop 5.0 LE. I am pretty sure that I'm not nearly close to getting the maximum quality out of my pictures since I do know this program only from learning by doing. Could someone more familiar with the program give a short introduction about what can be done to improve the often soft images? I would be especially interested in what's about this "unsharp mask" command and how to use it properly.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Christian :eek!:

Christian,I was given advice by one of the forum members(Adey) re using levels.Very good for over and under exposure. If you go to the Photo Critique threads you will see peoples images and the help they have asked for re improvement, and the very useful info and technical help they have been given.May give you some ideas.
