Anyone know if Leica have plans to make a Birding Perger ?

I get really excited at the prospect of the best of porro optics and roof body advantages combined.

HI

There has been a strong rumour that Leica tried to do this but couldn't find a way to get the weight down to a competitive level.

Of course rumours aren't necessarily true.

And the product specialist I spoke with at an Optics function in April said he knew of no plans whatsoever for any additional use of the Perger Porro System past the rangefinder models.

Of course if you'd have asked a ZEISS rep YESTERDAY if Zeiss would ever launch an EL-looking Victory model with a field flattener I'm sure you'd have gotten a resounding "NO!" or "NEIN!" o:D

Reason for editing: To please some Brit... :-O

Maybe the markets not there for a new porro (even if it looked like a roof) but with so many seriously good optics at the top it would give Leica a unique position.

What? No plans to introduce anything? Ever?

Things at Leica are worse than we thought :smoke:

I talked to a Leica rep recently and told him I was waiting for a new line to come out before I buy the 10x42 I've been wanting. He did the math for me about how long it took Leica to replace the Trinovids with the Ultravids, which gave me the impression it may be as long as 3 years before that happens. Or maybe he was just trying to talk me into buying a new binocular.

That's how long it will take to move their operations to China. :smoke:
