Any ideas what bird this is? I've exhausted all avenues so far. I have more photos but I don't think that they will help.

Looks good for Sardinian warbler, which is a common species, but you're missing the feature which would nail it - eye / eye-ring colour.

I did spot Sardinian Warbler in Collins whilst on holiday, but the head shape threw me. The drawing in Collins seems to show a bit of an odd head shape.
 
Sardinian for me too. Most Sylvia warblers have 'crests' which can be raised when bird is excitable or anxious, leading to dramatic changes of head shape.
