Great to see the new generation here. You definitely have the best teacher in the Country.

Great job, Tom. This is a huge leap in sense of conservation and awareness among the younger generation.

Excellent stuff, students from Environmental Wildlife 12! You are living and studying in a fantastic area for birds. Through your sightings, you will be giving us all important information not only about bird migration but also their habitat needs... so as well as having fun you will be making a significant contribution to science.. that must be the coolest class in school! :)

What an idea! Congratulations, Environmental Wildlife 12. This is an opportunity for you to both learn and teach, as birders will be reading with much interest about your discoveries.

Camera Trap

Hi, we put a hidden camera in a forest in Jinshitan to find any wildlife living there. We put a dead chicken we called "Snow White" in order to attract other animals by the smell. Here are what we get from September until now:
Two Siberian Weasels
Eurasian Squirrel
Amur Hedgehog
Common Pheasant

Jinshitan Oct. 14, 2014

On October 14, our teacher took us in to kind of secret location in Jinshitan where only few people are allowed to enter. To be honest, I really don’t know where we are at that time, but we have to say we were shocked by these beautiful view and plenty of the birds. The Schrenck's Bittern photo was taken through a Swarovski ATX-95 with an I-pad.

We didn't have time to see all the birds there but saw:

Schrenck’s Bittern 1
White Wagtail 2
Grey Wagtail 2
Yellow-browed Warbler 1
Green Sandpiper 1

We also learned about why the water looks so different and saw where the pollution was coming from.

It sounds like a good trip! The bittern is a very exciting bird to see. Congratulations on seeing it and capturing it in a picture! Perhaps it stood there and fed for a while? That would have been great to see.

Nice sightings! Schrenck's Bittern is always good to see... it must be getting late for this bird now. It will soon be on its way south for the winter before the water freezes.

Tackling water pollution is a high priority issue in China and learning about the sources of water pollution is the first step. Cleaning up the water will benefit everyone - birds and people.

Keep up the good work!

Trip to the bird banding station in Laotieshan

Last Friday our class went to LaoTieShan, which was located in LvShun district in Dalian. We visited a bird banding station which was set to study about birds migration. Near the station, there was an artificial lake which attracted birds flying down for drink. Large area of nets were placed around the lake, so that birds would be trapped as they finished drinking. Those birds would be put on a band which has a individual code. Before letting birds go, we recorded the species, gender, and time in accurate. o:)

Camera Trap in Jinshitan

We have been to a forest again in Jinshitan, and set up a camera with a dead chicken, which called "sleeping beauty". After few days, we went to the forest to check the pictures that the camera took. Surprisingly, we saw some living creatures. There were two kinds, one was Common Magpie and another kind was Eurasian Red Squirrel.

Nice work on the sightings at Jinshitan. I love the picture of the Yellow-throated Bunting - I like his other name, Elegant Bunting because he is so handsome.

Was the magpie seen eating the chicken? I guess the squirrel was not. Did it look like any animal had eaten the chicken? We're interested to hear more about what you find out about some animals in the forest there.

Looking forward to more of your sightings!

An interesting report. Only a few Goldeyes, but they are quite good looking, aren't they? There is still a heron there - I hope he departs for warmer places soon enough!

Your red squirrel is quite handsome, but the sleeping beauty does not seem to be attracting so much attention - that's very interesting. I'm surprised if the magpies at least aren't coming to visit.

Camera Trap December 2nd 2014

We changed the location of the camera and we located it in Coniferous Forest. We bought a chicken named "Elsa". A week later, we found three different kinds of animals. Those animals are Eurasian Red Squirrel,Siberian Weasel and Tolai Hare .They were all fat and healthy!
