I spent a month in South Wales and due to the lack of visible birds, spent a lot of time looking at flowers and things.;)

Would appreciate some help with this first lot if my pictures aren't too bad.

1 - Geum urbanum Wood Avens
2 - Geranium robertianum Herb Robert
3 - A species of blackberry, best guess Rubus armeniacus Armenian Blackberry (from the Caucasus, but widely naturalised in Britain; the most vigorous bramble)
4 - Cirsium arvense Creeping Thistle
5 - Achillea millefolium Yarrow

Thanks very much guys. Your help is much appreciated.

There will likely be some more pictures along in a few days.;)

Another set if you wouldn't mind.

I do know #1 but it's name has disappeared from my brain!

Picture 3 is a zoomed out version of #2 (any chance of IDing the mauve flowers in the b/g?

Picture 5 is a detail from picture 4

As always your help would be much appreciated

1 Tufted Vetch, Vicia cracca
2/3 Meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria
4/5 Not Rosebay, but Great or Hairy Willowherb, Epilobium hirsutum

Thanks very much again guys.

I thought it looked a bit like R-b Willow Herb, but there was something different about it. I've never heard of Hairy Willowherb!

It is a very common + conspicuous plant Delia- usually in damp areas but often well away from water.

Another set taken over a couple of weeks.

I don't know whether #1 & #3 are escaped garden plants, if so I'm sorry. Both growing in the canal.

#2 was growing on a bridge over a stream. My first thought was an ivy, but don't really think so now.

Is #4 Himalayan Balsum?

Not surprised you'd not heard of 'Hairy Willowherb' (I hadn't either) - Great Willowherb is the correct name :t:

Hairy Willowherb is an often cited vernacular for this species which is why I gave both names as well as the scientific name which is the PROPER name!!!:t:

1, 3 +5 are all native. 2+ 4 are naturalised species. You are right about ID of 4 which is very invasive.

Others are:

1 Arrowhead, Sagittaria sagittifolia
2 Ivy-leaved Toadflax, Cymbalaria muralis
3 Branched Bur-reed, Sparganium erectum
5 Water Plantain, Alisma plantago-aquatica

It's Great Willowherb, which is the official standard English name per the BSBI checklist. BSBI are the naming authority for the English names of Britain's native flora, like BOU are for birds :t:

I don't disagree with that which is why I gave that name first but many of our wildflowers have alternative names (Birds-foot Trefoil has some 70 but most are pretty obscure) which many people with an interest in wildflowers may use + maybe totally unaware (or care) there is an "official" list.

I don't think your constant pedantry on these boards is very helpful + I have no desire to dilute the richness of the English language so will give alternative names that are very much in use!

Think this is the last batch:

1: is this Lords and Ladies?
2 & 3 don't know
5: Snowberry?

4: sorry, it's a fungus, if no-one in here knows I'll re-post in the correct forum.

Hi Delia

Your IDs are correct for 1 + 5
2 Ribbed Melilot, Melilotus officinalis
3 Purple Loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria

You might want to post your fungus in the appropriate sub-forum where you might get somebody more expert like Trichia to ID that?

Thanks very much aeshna.... I've never even heard of melilot before!!

I'll repost the fungus in the correct forum.

Cheers lad

Sorry.... now I'm finding the odd one(s) I overlooked on the original trawls through my pictures.

What's this pretty one please.
