Very glad to hear. I remember some years back (2007?) when we lost them all and it took several years to build up population again. Pam

It was a little more recent than that Pam.

The species disappeared in late 2010 with just one record in the first half of 2011 (a female at the Flashes on the 3rd January). The only sightings later in 2011 were a male on three dates in September at the North Moors and one near the West Hide at the Moors Pool in December. The next record wasn't then until July 2012 from the west side of the Moors Pool with reports only on a further 25 dates during that year and no reports of a regular singing male until April 2013.

Wikipedia states that "December 2010 has the lowest Central England Temperature (CET), -0.7°C, since a CET of -1.1°C was recorded for February 1986 [prior to Cetti's Warbler colonisation at Upton Warren]. December 2010 can also be confirmed to be the coldest December for 120 years, since a monthly CET of -0.8°C was recorded for December 1890 and the second-coldest December since records began in 1659."

The Met Office's summary for December 2010 is as follows: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/summaries/2010/december. This includes a low of -18.9°C on the 19th December at the nearest weather recording station (Pershore) and a run of nine consecutive days when the maximum daily temperature did not exceed -0.1°C.

This is really amazing! When you consider how small Upton is compared to all those Norfolk reserves.
Well done to all who contribute! Keep it coming!:t::t:

Des reports this morning:

Moors Pool 80% frozen; North Moors totally frozen.

The Flashes when the middle area was completely dry and the there were 3 separate Flashes. The old hide was 15 metres in front of the present hide and Avocet breeding was just a dream

Testimony to the enduring appeal of the reserve its management and the birds that occur there. Long may it continue.

No doubt due to the commitment and hard work of the volunteers there, so lots of people want to keep updated with the news; and the generous sharing of that news on the forum. A seasonal big thank you to all involved.B :)

Here are a few snapshots of today's sightings. Weather was dull, light was poor, photographic opportunities were really limited!

It just amazes me how such a tiny area of Britain has and does attract so much bird and wildlife.......and thanks for the Aerial shots of the reserve.... fantastic.

Hi all

Well done for passing the 7 million mark :)

Many thanks from me on a personnel level. I began serious birding only in February this year and the advice, tips and general warmth of all at Upton Warren have made it the favourite spot for my birding escapades.

See you all again Saturday :)
