Best place to see Golden Parakeet (Guarouba guaruba)
There is very little recent information about these birds in the wild. I know Caxiuana used to be the preferred place but apparently it is closed to visitors now. I have heard reports of Golden Parakeets in the Tapajos/Cupari area, Amazonia National Park near Itaituba and some areas south of Belem.
Has anyone been to any of these areas? They don't have any eco-lodges there and are pretty off the beaten track even for birders. |

For someone willing to be more adventurous than follow the last Western twitcher, the following resources might be useful:

Hello...if it's not too late a reply, they certainly used to be available at Amazonia Nat Park near Itaituba. I went twice there (2003 and 2005 I think) and saw them both times without too much trouble.
Not a particularly compfy place to stay though - just go to the Ibama office in Itaituba and sort it out with the guy there - you have to take in your own food but the 2 blokes in the hut where you stay do all the cooking , and its a great place. Good luck, cheers David |
