Eider and Skua locations around Loch Moidart & Ardnamurchan? (1 Viewer)

Evening everyone,

I wondered if anyone would be able to help?

I'm after some good locations for Skua and Eider ducks around the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.

I'm willing to travel around so any reliable sites would be very much appreciated.

I'm staying near to Acharacle so close to Loch Moidart and Loch Shiel if that helps.

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi Steve,

You are likely to encounter female eiders with well grown ducklings almost anywhere along sheltered sections of the west coast however the males will be offshore in moulting flocks just now. There are a few pairs of Great Skuas starting on some of the smaller Inner Hebrides. They will have all gone to sea by now. Given the right weather, strong westerly wind, Ardnamurachan Point is as good as anywhere to watch for seabird passage. All four skua species are possible along with Manx Shearwaters and maybe other shearwaters. To stand a chance of photography, which is what I think you are interested in you need to get out off shore in a boat. Local to where you are staying I would recommend a trip out with Andy Jackson, Ardnamurchan Charters Ltd based on Loch Sunart or a trip out to the Small Isles on the Sheerwater with Arisag Marine.

Great Skua passed over the boat I was on yesterday. It was heading from the Skye mainland (circa loch Coruisk) towards Soay.
