This was near a river around outskirts of Pune,Maharashtra India. caused a flock of river terns and shelducks to rise up and fly. There were lots of black kites in the area but this one was larger and a bit different. Any idea?

I would say Booted Eagle. White "head light" visible in the fourth pic. Also paler inner primaries typ for Booted.

A very good one is "The Raptors of Europe and the Middle East" by Dick Forsman. Dosn't, of coarse, cover all the raptors of the Indian subcontinent. In Thailand I also use "A photographic guide of the Raptors of Thailand' (so far only in thai). "Raptors of the World" (Ferguson-Lees),a heavy piece and only for the book shelf!
