In mid-January we took the long drive to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where we encountered quite a few winter hummers. However, these weren't Rufous Hummingbirds or other "western vagrants" folks have come to expect these days in the eastern U.S. No, they were Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that historically bailed out of the Carolinas during cold weather. For a photo essay about these hardy hummers and why we think they're yet another indication of "global climate change," please visit the 8-16 January 2012 installment of "This Week at Hilton Pond" at http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek120108.html
While there don't forget to scroll down for a list of all birds banded or recaptured at the Center, along with some miscellaneous comments about local winter bird scarcity and an elderly White-throated Sparrow. We also acknowledge folks who help support the Center's education, research, and conservation initiatives.
