A couple of Common Darters were making the most of the sun in Felbrigg Park this afternoon, in the meadow NW of the lake.

Also at least a couple of Common Darters at Strumpshaw this afternoon plus a lone Brimstone along the Sandy Wall track.

This Common Darter was basking in the sunshine beside the dipping pool at Hickling on Sunday.

Felbrigg Lakes - a new, permanent body of water (? !)

This is Felbrigg Lake ‘North’, taken last weekend.

Last year, considerable excavations were carried out where you can now see the water, resulting in what amounts to a second, smaller lake- and submerging what were rich water-meadows.

As I ventured there, for the first time in several months, I was struck by the thought that this might be permanent. The (NT) website is not fully operational (“a few technical issues”), so I couldn’t find out more from that source.

If it proves to be permanent, it will have a massive and detrimental effect on the number of dragonflies. At the right time of year, many dozens of, for instance, Broad-bodied Chasers were patrolling just north of the causeway/boardwalk/dam. I cannot see this happening this year, as they won’t be able to breed, with most of the vegetation (around which they fed) covered, unless the water level is lowered.

Will it be ? Does anyone know ?

Not exactly flooded with responses

I have been privately informed that the plan has always been to lower the sluice gates, once winter has passed (possibly, never, therefore!), so that the water level will drop.

I sincerely hope this will be the case and that, conversely, my spirits will be raised in the continued enjoyment of chasers.

My first damselfly of the year was found perched on my shoulder this afternoon in my garden! I'm assuming it's a Large Red...

Certainly is a Large Red Damselfly female - newly emerged and the first for the year nationally. Only a few weeks late!!
Please could you email your postcode to me at pamtaylor@british-dragonflies.org.uk so that I can enter the record correctly in our database.
Many thanks
Pam

A walk around the pond at St Andrews Business Park yesterday lunchtime produced a teneral damselfly. Unfortunately I spotted it as it made its maiden voyage up into the trees so no positive ID, but almost certainly Large Red at this time of the year. At least that's my duck broken for this year. Roll on the Hairy Hawkers!
