Am new to this - first post - so if I am in the wrong place please excuse!! Have Canon 50d and because of frequent dull light am wondering whether to have for bird photography and perhaps macro, if it is worth getting a speedlite. Would appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks
John

Speedlite and a Better Beamer can be useful for providing fill flash in dull light. Some birds will react to the flash but it is surprising how many don't.

+1 to the above - however remember that because animals are essentially unpredictable (unless you know the specific individual animal you're working with) you'll always have to treat flash as a one shot wonder. Line up - take the shot and then see if the animal reacts to it. If the animal flees you've hopefully still got at good shot - if the animal ignores you can resume shooting.

I was wondering about the effective flash range when you use your fill flash. Here in BC, dull and grey can be a lot of the time!!
