For all its allure as a birding destination, Arizona has not produced a single book-length study of the state's birdlife since 1964 (the 1981 "Annotated Checklist" really doesn't count, useful as it is). All that is about to change.
The University of New Mexico Press informs me that the Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas, eds. Troy Corman et al., will be available August 1. I saw the galleys this spring, and can strongly recommend the book not only for those interested in Arizona's avifauna but for all those who appreciate good writing and good photography. This book is likely to serve as a model for other atlasing projects for some time to come.
