I managed 113 in a day around Cairns with BF member Selsey Birder and his wife. We weren't trying for a big total or anything and indeed the day was pretty leisurely.

Bird race totals up here are usually around 250+ but I don't know what the record is without looking it up.

Yes, in NE. The 200+ mark is reached on almost every marathon by catalonian teams. Pretty amazing I'd say!

I agree with Gunnar that the biggest day can be beat in southeastern Peru with the right logistics, observers, and some luck. With a fair amount of luck, we could even beat it in Costa Rica. Luck is always a factor, especially concerning weather- I did a big day in Costa Rica earlier this year and heavy rain in the mountains wiped out chances for about 40 species and running late left our main waterbird and coastal spot out of the race- would have picked up 20-30 more species. Our total for the day ended up being 260. Having spent a lot of time in Tambopata, I am looking forward to the results! Did a big day at TRC with Rudy Gellis in 2001 and we managed 233 species just from walking on the trails (interesting to get the exact same total as Ovenbird43 at Tiputuni with similar effort).

A problem with the ABA totals is that you have to be an ABA member to submit. I am not sure if it was that way in the past but it is at the present. I like Chris Butterworth´s idea of doing a BirdForum big day. Lets do it!

I'm up for it! If I can get someone to drive me around.... otherwise it will be a walking 'big day' from home!

We could devote a thread to it here or somewhere else on the forum and post our day totals and maybe a condensed 'trip report', i.e. within one post, of the highlights.

If that means Sep 16th I'll be on a pelagic off Lanzarote all day, some goodies could be added there. I'm in
