New to the Forum....question about a hepatic tanager in Missouri (1 Viewer)

Hi, I looked up several videos and photos of the bird I believe I saw this morning. I wish I could have gotten a photo of it. If I do, I will definitely post it. The color was what struck me the most. It was orange, but not like the orange on an oriole, it was like a rusty orange and the whole body was that way. The wings had a bit of brown lines on them, but it was mostly orange. I had never seen this bird before. It was very skiddish with the other birds around the feeder and never did land on the feeder. It flew from the feeder for a brief hop up to the tree right next to it, then down to the rose bush under the feeder. Then, it flew off. I looked up the summer tanager and the scarlet tanager and they are nothing like the one I saw. Those are way to bright of a color. Could I have actually seen a Hepatic Tanager here in Missouri? Thanks for any input.

Hi RobRen, and welcome to Birdforum!

I can't imagine that what you were looking at was a Hepatic Tanager - they're kind of a dull red all over, not orange. Summer tanagers, esp. young males, can look somewhat more orange all over (although they're usually "blotchy"), I wonder if it was one of those? They can look very different from the adult males (which is what you would likely have seen in a quick online search).

Hepatic Tanager inquiry

Thanks everyone for the input on the Tanager. It may have been a young Summer Tanager since I have seen several of the adult ones here this year. I was just so blown away by it, it was beautiful and I hadn't seen it before. Thanks again, RobRen:t:
