Osprey, Gambia, 2013 , White ring NW (1 Viewer)

George Edwards

Nom de plume
In 2013 I posted a pic of an Osprey with White ring and NW black letters on right tarsus, and another ring (silver?) on left tarsus. I emailed a few people - including Roy Dennis in Scotland - but came up blank. He did confirm that the bird was not ringed in Scotland. Here is the old thread http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=252247 .

I thought I'd give it another go, so have emailed a dozen western european banding organisations. So far I have ascertained that the bird was not ringed in Denmark either. I've tried the web form for Eurring, but that just leads to Roy Dennis again and the colour ring is on the wrong leg for Scotland. So the pattern does not match any official rings for ospreys.

I've now got a hunch it may have been ringed in Menorca, as the ring pattern fits with one mentioned in a Spanish ring pattern pdf I saw in another thread. So I have sent off a couple of emails and am awaiting replies.

Fantastic news - Sabine at BTO came up trumps. It turns out it IS a Scottish bird, but it was incorrectly ringed on the right leg instead of the left leg and recorded as a left tarsus job. They went back and checked a photo in the nest and luckily the ring was just visible on the right tarsus. I'll be getting the details shortly.
