So now onto 145 Clements (all seen well). I'm hoping I get a better strike rate in the Phils at the end of the year! Keeping my fingers crossed that the much wanted Eagle Owl shows well..

cheers, alan

Now up to 151 species in Clements (IOC is about 157 I think). The Eagle Owl in Manila showed well! A thin year ahead although Hodgson's Frogmouth could be a new nocturnal in Vietnam and potentially Japanese Scops Owl..in Japan.

cheers, alan

Up to 54. Added Amazonian Pygmy-Owl in Brazil in June and Fulvous Owl in Mexico in December.

Targeting Long-whiskered Owlet in June of this year.

I'm up to three now... Long-eared, Short-eared, and Great Horned. Eastern Screech and Northern Saw-whet are heard only. Surely I'll see an Eastern Screech Owl soon!?

Granted, I don't go owling much at all (yet).

Fantastic shot of a fantastic bird. I'm quite intrigued about the diet of these birds. They look tooled-up to take on some serious prey, but what do these suburban ones eat?

I assumed they must be feeding on rats around the picnic site, but I didn't see any rats! They must be quite retiring.

56, including 5 heard only. I love them! Latest additions: Sri Lanka Bay Owl and Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, both in Kerala, Southern India.

André

Now up to 82 species (including 8 heard only). Latest addition was a nice Pel's Fishing Owl in Uganda.

Wow! Forgotten to update this thread for quite a while!

24. Spectacled Owl (Costa Rica)

25. Austral Pygmy-owl (Chile)

... and again, have let this list drop off the map (for a truly disturbing number of years!).

26. Little Owl (France)

27. Pearl-spotted Owlet (Namibia)

PC.

Collared Scops Owl (India)
Snowy Owl (Sweden)
Buffy Fish Owl (Malaysia)
Tawny Owl (UK)
San Isidro Owl (Ecuador)
Ferruginous Pygmy Owl (Mexico)
Asian Barred Owlet (Bangladesh)
Little Owl (UK)

Short-eared Owl (UK)
Western Barn Owl (UK)
Eastern Barn Owl (India)

Two more recent additions for me;

Barking Owl - On Halmahera, September '08 (never been to Oz! so a welcome addition)
Minahassa Masked Owl - Sulawesi, September '08. A long awaited addition!

Need 17 more to make the 100, expecting Morepork in New Zealand next month and Blakiston's Fish Owl in Japan at Christmas.

Any suggestions on the best countries outside Asia for owls? (numbers or spectacular species........)

Costa Rica, Crested, Black and White, Spectacled plus others, Great Potoo as well.

59 Owls for me.

Well...we resurrected hummers, herons, and shorebirds, might as well update this as well!

Northern Boobook (Japan)
Morepork (NZ)
Powerful Owl (Australia)

Blakiston's Fish Owl (Japan)
Verreaux's Eagle-Owl (Kenya)
Great Horned Owl (ABA)
Snowy Owl (ABA)

I live something like 8 hours away from Sax-Zim Bog, so there is really no reason why I shouldn't have Great Gray and Northern Hawk-Owl, other than I hate car birding by myself and I hate cold weather birding, and Sax Zim involves both! Not sure what the next owl is...I could get lucky with either of those two species if I put the effort in or maybe even a Boreal Owl, and failing that I might be able to add a few species in Ecuador this summer. Still need Long-eared Owl for my Wisconsin list, so hopefully pick that up this winter.
