It's now thought that the Osprey seen on the nest is not one of our pair, as the markings are different and it is not ringed. It is possibly a young female.
Meanwhile, No 14 is making his way north over the Sahara. The team are wondering if he'll travel over Italy and the Alps like he did last year.

The Bassenthwaite OspreyWatch season officially opens on Saturday, 1st April.
The Team have now identified the Osprey as KL and today report seeing a second Osprey mating with her, so it is presumed to be Unring, but driving rain sweeping across Bassenthwaite is preventing a close look at his markings.
Ospreys are back at Foulshaw in South Cumbria. The male (ringed YW) is a Bassenthwaite bird and the female is from Kielder. An Osprey has also been spotted at Esthwaite Water in the southern area of the Lake Distriict - there is a Facebook page to follow the season there - Esthwaite Water Osprey Safari

KL and her mate have been fishing and adding sticks and grass to the nest. The Lake District OspreyWatch team have made improvements to the viewing area at Whinlatter this year: a new camera, a new viewing area and bigger CCTV screens, giving much better views of the nest.
Meanwhile No. 14 successfully completed his journey across the Sahara and through Algeria. He then flew across the Mediterranean into the Granada region of southern Spain. On the evening of 6th April he had reached the western side of the Pyrenees, having covered about 380 km that day.

KL laid her 3rd egg on Easter Monday (17th April) and the pair are taking turns to incubate. A 3rd Osprey is still being seen in the area.
Meanwhile, No 14 made it back to south Cumbria on Easter Sunday (16th April). He visited the nesting Ospreys at Roudsea and was also reported at Esthwaite by the Osprey Safari people. In fact he is supposed to have paired up with a female Osprey at Esthwaite last year, ringed MU, but they did not lay any eggs. I did not see any reference to this by the LDOP people - anyone know if this is true?

The 3 chicks are now 5 weeks old and were ringed at the beginning of July. The eldest is a female and was given Blue U7, the middle chick, a male, was given Blue U8 and the youngest, also male, was given Blue U6. They were all given a clean bill of health. This is the first year since 2009, that 3 chicks have survived. Let's hope they all fledge successfully. There was no menion of any of them being satellite tagged.

A belated update on the end of the Osprey season at Bassenthwaite:
The adult female, KL, left in mid-August on her migration south to West Africa.
Blue U8, named Artagal, was the first juvenile to leave opn his migration south.
Blue U6, named Ulysses, left in the last week of August.
Blue U7, named Elter, and the adult male, Unring, were still there at the end of August, which is the official end the Osprey season.
The adult female, KL, left in mid-August on her migration south to West Africa.
