Shooting birds with the Nikon D600 -- d9, d21 or d39 (1 Viewer)

Hi All,

I have been using a Nikon D600 for almost 8 months now and my preferred AF mode for photographing with it is AF-C and d9, because I have seen that I get the best quality photographs with this combination. I do use the AF-C and S and AF-S and S combinations too (like when the bird is deeply in foliage or otherwise not that easy to focus on), but as I said my preferred mode is AF-C and d9.

In fact, I had started shooting with the Nikon D600 while using a Sigma 150-500 (and was using a Nikon D90 earlier) and when I tried shooting with with d21 and d39 (and AF-C) with it, the photos were never optimally sharp; always looking as if there was some motion blur.

Lately I have moved onto a Nikon 600 mm f/4 VR (and TC 14E) and in the last 4-5 months that I have been using the 600 mm, I have persisted with AF-C and d9.

No need to say anything about the results, the Nikon 600 mm being what it is!

However, I have been trying out the AF-C and d39 mode on it lately and I am again getting photographs that are not that great.

Now, my question is -- is it best to stick to d9? Why is it that the IQ takes a dive when I use d21 and d39? Has anyone else faced a situation similar to mine?

Cheers,

Anand
