new lens

Bought a new lens from the classifieds here on birdforum. Thought I would post a couple of pics from my first time out. Still getting used to it so should get better with practise. Composition is terrible in some but the idea was more a day out getting used to the lens rather than keepers. Lens was a Canon 300mm f4 L on Canon 50D The butterfly was probably 15 - 20ft away.

John.

Buzzard

From the field opposite the house. Unfortunately too far away for a decent photo.

A kingfisher has been visiting the Lagan weir in Belfast quite a bit this week, normally in the morning when the light is at its worst for taking photographs though!! its using the pontoons in front of the 'big fish' sculpture as a platform to fish from

Is the fudge duck still down in lurgan park lake heading down tomorrow to Oxford island and portmore so would call in thanks in advance John

Hi, Thinking of going to either Oxford island or castle espie/strangford lough on Sunday. Which is the better location for a days birding. I'm presuming its around strangford.

Cheers,

Ger.

Both are good, Castle espie is 2 miles outside Comber, and would be better if you are bringing the boy as there is a good centre but Oxford Island is free. Check on irishbirding.com to see if anything has been about.

Thanks roger, no I'll be child free just me and a fellow birder. There were a couple of birds around strangford today but no reports from Oxford. I'll keep an eye out just in case.

Cheers,

Ger.

day out birding

Have no idea about Castle Espie at the moment but can tell you Oxford Island is not a good choice at the moment. I was there on Thursday and there is a lot of work going on such as new car parks and also quite close to 1 of the hides they are felling trees that have become storm damaged etc. So loads of workmen and noise and at the moment no so many birds close in.

a shot of a juvenile dipper taken today ,also a few shots from recent weeks

Appreciate any advice for a trip to Rathlin Island on Thursday. Got a Canon 500D with a 200f2.8, and 2x Kenko. Will be arriving in Belfast and getting the noon ferry over, with the 4.15 back. Understand there is a bus to the RSPB reserve – is this the best approach?

Try and not stay in the pub all night like I did and don't try to sleep off the hangover in a nice field by the sea or else make sure you've got tick tweezers.

Yes there was a bus when I was there but I walked it out the few miles to the reserve and bused back later. You could hire bikes also?

Anyhow its a great place. I wish I would have stayed longer or since gone again.

hi Bob going by the times you,ve stated my advice would be to get a return ticket for the bus
if you were to walk oneway it would take approx 1hr 30mins to complete the journey
hope this helps
ps have a nice trip

Rathlin Island - thanks.

got the bus, and glad I did - quite hilly. Bit early for puffins, saw a few but so far away. Nice day though, but chilly at the RSPB site.

here's a couple of pics.
