Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast (1 Viewer)

10 - 12 Waxwings in Thelwall today, in the vicinity of the junction of Stanton Road and Thelwall New Road.

Source my Mum and neighbour Reg.

There you go, news from Thelwall to Verdun to Birdforum, isn't modern technology great?

Are there any Pink-footed Geese to be found in the Cheshire area at the moment? Did not see any recent references, any advice much appreciated

Clive Harris

Parkgate is probably the best place to see them. They can be difficult to see in the long grass and this winter tend to be staying on the edge of the marsh, but every so often a sizable flock can be seen flying.

Seems a bit high, specially given the height of the tide. Given that no more than 20 were well seen during the 9.9m tides on monday and tuesday, how confident are we of this count? I think I'm right in saying if 30 is correct it is the highest count we've ever had on the Marine Lake.

To quote the observer - "30ish" was the figure.

Where are the Waxwings in Wilmslow - would like to try for them tomorrow (Sunday) - or poss also ones at Handforth?

Many thanks

Clive Harris

The Handforth birds were flyovers. Maybe worth checking the Stanley Green Estate by B & Q where birds have appeared in recent winters. Not sure where the Wilmslow birds are, just saw them listed on Birdguides. Again in previous years they have frequented the Pinewood Road estate.

Many thanks - had a look at both spots this morning but no Waxwings, nice morning to be out though.

A rare visit to the North West for me, for work, and managed an hour around Redesmere at lunch time. In addition to the usual park pond species at the feeding frenzy area, there were a number of nice surprises on the Capesthorne Hall lake, including 4 gadwall, a kingfisher and a single goosander. Also, in the trees were several goldcrest and a strikingly plumaged buzzard
