New Sigma 150/600 contemporary (1 Viewer)

Hi Roy,

Thanks Roy.
I use a Kenko Teleplus 1.4x PRO300 DGX.
But at the longer end, when the minimum aperture gets above f8, AF is struggeling. Sometimes no AF.
AF with live view works quite okay.
Maybe I have to try the Sigma 1.4 extender, the 1401. Or maybe the older version...
By the way, I use a Nikon D750.
But first I have to give myself the time and opportunity getting to know this lens.

With the Nikon version only the Sigma TC's work properly.

The kenko versions struggle to AF correctly (jumpy AF)

The modified Nikon version works but reports EXIF data incorrectly

The Sigma EX DG and the TC-1401 work well but are very similar in image quality so save some money and buy the DG (used a little over £100)

Just my 2p

i am thinking of getting the sigma c 150-600 as an alternatve to my nikon 300f4 af-s and tc14ii converter on my d7100.
at the moment i can get rather good results by cropping to 600mm equivalent focal length with the nikon lens and tc but i was wondering if there would be any real advantage by using the sigma c.
has anyone compared them?

Hi, is it the new VR version that you are using?

But as far as i can see om Sigma Compatibility schedule you only have MF on the EX DG. You have AF on TC-1401 if your camera can AF on f8.

Correct, you need a D7100, D7200, D750, D800, D810, or a professional Dx body.

The Sigma 1401 TC works with my Contemporary when connected to my Nikon D3300, it shows up as F9. Initially it seem not to work too well, but I will need to test it after the micro adjustment of the lens.

Very nice Isaac, looks like you just about have the lens mastered. The swallow shots are just great.

How much are you cropping (if at all) in those?

Thanks. Swallows were cropped a bit differently. Bird looking right is a bit more than 25% (meaning the picture is a bit less than 75% of original) and the other, the bird looking left is cropped down to about 80% of original so 20% of it is cropped.

These were taken in mid day sun. Need to get back there early in the morning to get better light on those birds.

Hi,

Isaac, I love your swallow pics...
and others from you.
I hope I learn to use my Sigma 150-600 C like you do and make such very good pics.
Till that happens I enjoy yours... and those from Roy C...

Very kind of you to say that. Look forward to seeing your results posted here. Is there something about the lens that you have been struggling with?

Hi,

no, I'm not strugling... Just a bit busy, not so much time for it....
I playing with its AF fine tuning with the USB dock, a very, very nice toy.
I hope to find some time to take the Sigma out doors, coming week.

Hi,

yesterday, I was playing with the Sigma lens and its USB dock.
I use "the dot method" for AF fine tuning.
I've read somewhere that I have to double the Nikon numbers in the Sigma dock... I still have to try if this is treu.
You can read my result in the attachment.

Semi macro with the 'C' at 600mm and near the MFD. probably too soft for some but it makes it a versatile lens LOL.

Great shots. Thank you for being willing to share your experience. Which converter do you use?

I have a Canon 1.4 mkiii and am considering the Sigma C.

Lovely set of photos, Issac. That's the first time I have seen a Piping Plover, it is a cracking little bird.

Thanks. I really was lucky. We had great conditions for an onshore sea watch. Late day haze with a strong south east wind are prime conditions to bring pelagic species in to New York City waters during mid June to early July. I got my second ever Manx Shearwater for New York City. Sky was really overcast but the sun would peak through for a few moments here and there. That is when I got the pics. Now tomorrow morning I am going out before work to another beach to try and get better shots of them at first light. We will see if the birds cooperate.
